Primary Treatment
This first step in the treatment process takes place at the headworks; which includes a bar screen and grit removal
system. The screening process removes suspended and floating material but does not remove colloidal and dissolved
solids. Grit removal includes removal of heavier sand, silt, grains, etc. Grit removal prevents clogging of pipes, channels,
pumps, etc. It also prevents reduction in volume due to deposits in tanks and channels. Primary treatment will significantly
reduce time and money spent on maintenance of other plant equipment.

The Covington WRF headworks is covered to provide odor and corrosion control.

Screenings are compressed to remove water and sealed in bags to prevent odors and flies.
