Heating and Cooling

  • Thermostats at 78 degrees in the summer and 68 in the winter and leave the thermostat there.
  • Make sure your furniture, curtains and rugs do not block the flow of air from vents and air registers.
  • Make sure filters are changed monthly during the heating and cooling season. Pleated filters should be changed every three months.

In the winter:

  • Curtains should be open to let the sun help warm your home.
  • Make sure the damper is closed on your fireplace when it is not in use. This will insure cold air from coming down your chimney.
  • Dress warmly so you can set the thermostat a few degrees lower.

In the summer:

  • Curtains should be closed during the summer to keep out the warm sun especially on the east and west sides of your home.
  • Avoid using appliances that give off heat during the hottest parts of the day. Cooking and washing clothes should be done in the morning or late evening.
  • Use fans to take some of the strain off of your air conditioning unit. Ceiling fans should be ran forward in the summer to create a breeze.
  • If your air conditioning unit runs constantly but seems to not be cooling, try changing the filter.

TIPS:

  • Fix leaky faucets.
  • Rinse clothes in cold water.
  • Wash only full load clothes.
  • Dry loads one right after another.
  • Clean lint filters.
  • Run dishwasher only when full.
  • Set the refrigerator temperature between 46 and 60 degrees, the freezer no colder than zero.
  • Skip the drying cycle and let the dishes air dry.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights.
