A geographic information system (GIS) consists of computers or workstations, software, and data for analyzing, manipulating, printing, digital distribution and displaying all forms of geograph information.
The City of Covington GIS project began in 1998 as a joint venture between the City of Covington, Newton County Board of Commissioners, and the Newton County Water Authority.
Digital Ortho Photography (aerial photographs), Parcel Data (provided by the Newton County Tax Assessor's Office), and Road Centerlines serve as the backbone of our system. Other information available includes2006 contour data (in 2-Ft. increments), wetlands, streams, zoning, historic districts and 2003 and 2008 aerial photography. Utility data is under construction, and will continue to be updated once complete.
