Born in Covington, Hawnethia is the
daughter of Ruby Mae Mitchell, Sr, (nee Hopson) and the well-known
and respected educator Nathaniel Mitchell, Sr, who served as Principal
of the historic Washington Street School.
Following in her father's footsteps, Hawnethia became an educator
and remained a dedicated and caring teacher for 33 years before
retiring from the Newton Board of Education (Newton High School).
A devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church in Covington,
in addition to serving as Chair of the Evangelism Committee and
Lay Speaker, she also sings with the gospel choir.
Hawnethia serves the community through
her hard work and contribution to the Covington Historic Preservation
Commission, the Harristown Neighborhood Association,
the Newton County Voters League and Newton County READS
where she teaches adults to prepare for their GED. She was one of
the original members of the Newton County African American Council
for the Arts where she played a key role in promoting, developing
and presenting arts programs and events.
Her Bachelor of Arts Degree was attained at Clark College (now Clark
Atlanta University) and her Masters of Arts Degree from Georgia
State University. While a student, Hawnethia was listed in "Who's
Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities." She is a
member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority.
Hawnethia enjoys public speaking and reciting poetry.
She is the loving wife of the late Charles Williams.
