Job Details

This is skilled work in operating heavy refuse collection trucks and equipment.
An employee in this class is responsible for operating a heavy-duty refuse collection truck, which also involves supervising collection personnel assigned to the crew. Work requires the employee to maintain collection schedules and follow established routes. In order to prevent injury to employees and/or damage to equipment and property, the employee must keep alert at all times while the refuse is being loaded onto truck.  Supervision is received from a superior who usually makes verbal or written assignments and inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

Job Duties

Operates heavy-duty truck with hydraulic packer and hydraulic front overhead hoist in the collection of garbage and trash from downtown and other business as well as residential areas within the City of Covington. Hitches front-end hoist to large garbage containers and operates hoist to pick up and dump containers into trucks.
Supervises refuse collection crews who assist in guiding truck and loading yard refuse and household refuse into collection truck as necessary.
Assures that truck is equipped, cleaned, serviced and in good operating condition; performs minor maintenance and reports needed repairs to supervisor.
May operate equipment of higher grades intermittently.
Performs related work as required.
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including refuse collection truck, pickup truck, lift on Refuse Collection Truck.


Job Qualifications

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in refuse collecting activities;
(B) Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
(C) Thorough knowledge of traffic ordinances and regulations concerning equipment use.
(D) Knowledge of the geography of the City of Covington.
(E) Skill in the safe operation and care of assigned equipment.

Job Education

Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school and/or GED equivalent.
(B) Ability to read and write English; experience in using heavy refuse collection truck and equipment operation, and in laboring work; or any combination of education and experience.

Job Computer Skills

Possession of a valid Georgia motor vehicle license Class B is required and applicant must submit a current Motor Vehicle Record that shows a good driving record for the last 3 years.  Applicant must be Insurable by City of Covington insurance carrier.
