Job Details

To locate and map underground cables, pipes and other conduits to prevent damage during excavations.

Job Duties

Utilize site plans, area maps and blueprints to locate underground high-voltage electrical cables, water lines, sewer lines, gas lines, as well as duct banks and electric/water/gas/sewer taps to buildings. Utilize site plans, area maps, blueprints, computer mapping database and other location information along with conduit-location equipment to locate conduits; update records using field findings. Indicate conduit locations and communicate other relevant information to excavation personnel or other appropriate authorities; attend coordination meetings at project sites to discuss and plan service outages. Utilize GPS mapping instrumentation to inventory identified utility mains and services. Transport location equipment and supplies to assigned sites; clean and maintain location equipment. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Qualifications

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (A) Some knowledge of utility construction principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; some knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting Division activities; (B) Some skill in operating the listed tools and equipment; some skill in basic drafting, surveying, and flagging. (C) Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field and office data, reports and systems; Ability to effectively communicate technical information, orally and in writing, to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public.

Job Education

Education and Experience: (A) Graduation from a high school or GED; and (B) Minimum of two years related experience; or (C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Computer Skills

(A) Must possess a valid State Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment; (B) Must be physically capable of moving about on construction work sites; and, (C) Must be able to work on-call for after hour emergency and damage response.
