Job Details

This is semi-skilled manual labor in the operation, construction and specialized maintenance of gas lines.
Work involves the use of some acquired skills in the operation of trucks and less complex automotive equipment, or the use of specialized machines and hand or power tools which can be learned on the job without great delay or difficulty.  Positions of this class either work under supervision or where work is routine and repetitive, under intermittent supervision in accordance with specific instructions and with defined procedures and schedules.

Job Duties

Assists skilled workers in the lining up of gas pipe, pipe cleaning and wrapping, making pipe taps, measuring and adjusting grade for pipe, securing and finishing pipe joints.
Assists skilled workers in setting up barriers around construction or repair areas in streets and sidewalks.
Bonds plastic pipe and service lines under direct supervision.
Loads and unloads trucks; performs minor maintenance on vehicles and services them with gas, oil, and water; may occasionally operate dump or trucks or mechanical loaders, tractor with mower attachment, fork lifts, and other less complex automotive equipment.
Operation (limited) of tractor and/or trencher.
Operates compressor, pneumatic tools, power tampers, rodding machine, paint machine, and various hand and power tools; may occasionally operate equipment of higher classification.
Flags traffic at worksites and establishes traffic control.
Locates and repairs/isolates leaks.
Maintains and repairs meters and regulators.
Organize and inventory truck stock and tools
Occasionally acts as lead worker or performs more semiskilled tasks in maintenance and minor construction operations.
Performs related work as required.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
(B) Prior experience working in an outdoor construction environment,/HVAC/Plumbing or
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience.
(D) Preferred 1 year gas experience

Job Education

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Considerable knowledge of less complex equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in gas and utility maintenance work.
(B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to identify hazardous situations that impact the public or property; Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to observe proper safety precautions; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public; ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to learn skills of gas pipeline locating and leak detection without great delay or difficulty.
Valid Class C Georgia Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record for past 3 years.  Must be insurable by City of Covington motor vehicle insurance carrier.
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including trucks, fork lift, tractor, tamper, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include:  close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee occasionally works in the proximity of live gas lines, vehicular traffic and in high, precarious places. Employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the environment is usually loud.
