GIS (Geographic Information Systems)  is a computer mapping technology that combines  maps with information. If you can picture a  database with hundreds or possibly thousands of  records that is linked to corresponding objects  on a map, then you understand the concept of  GIS.
The City of Covington GIS project began in 1998 as a joint venture between the City of Covington, Newton County Board of Commissioners, and the Newton County Water Authority. In February 1999, digital-ortho- photography (aerial photographs) was  taken of the entire county. This photography  serves as the base layer for our GIS. In addition,  a number of other layers including road centerlines, edge of pavements, wetland areas,  and topography (contours) were collected. Some of the information that is currently available is land parcel information (provided by the Newton County Tax Assessor's Office), 1999 contour data (in 2-Ft. increments), roads, wetlands, streams, zoning, historic  districts  and 1999 aerial photography. Utility data is under construction, and will continue to be updated once  complete.  New aerial photography could be taken as soon as February 2003.
Public access is available to most of this information through a public kiosk located in the front lobby of the Building  & Zoning Department located on Stalling Street. This kiosk has a touch-screen monitor and is capable of printing  8- 1/2" x 11" maps. Larger maps and/or topography data can be requested from the Covington GIS office. A fee will  be applied to printed and digital information, according to the nature and amount of information requested.
The City of Covington GIS office is located at 1146 Conyers Street, and office hours are Monday thru Friday, 8am - 5pm. Please contact Chris Maloch at 770-385-2095 for more information.
