The
City of Covington is known as "A Full Service
City " because
of the multitude of services it offers: electricity, natural
gas,
water and sewer services, sanitation, police
and fire protection, and the Covington Municipal Airport. The Main
Street program emphasizes downtown revitalization and historic preservation. The City of Covington, through the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia's (MEAG) statewide transmission and power generation system, serves electricity. Covington can reliably serve any size electrical load with competitive rates. Natural gas is available to customers throughout much of Newton County. Since the City of Covington owns its own gas distribution system and purchases gas wholesale from the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia (MGAG), they can sell gas at very competitive retail rates. Water for the City of Covington is produced at the Cornish Creek Water Plant. The plant is capable of producing 15 million gallons of water per day and water flows to Covington's water customers through 130 miles of water lines the City maintains. The Water Reclamation Division is comprised of a wastewater treatment plant that can treat up to 5.6 million gallons of wastewater per day; and EPD approved industrial pretreatment program; and a 1,500-acre joint venture land application facility used for final treatment and nutrient removal. The Covington fire department has received accredited agency status with the commission on fire accreditation international |
