The Water Reclamation Division (WRD) is responsible for the City's wastewater treatment system and wastewater lift stations (pump stations). Presently we have one Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), a Land Application Facility (LAF) and eight wastewater Lift Stations. The WRF treats an average of 2.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater from residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. The wastewater flows, via the numerous miles of sewer lines and lift stations to the WRF where it is then treated by three phases of treatment, physical, biological and chemical.

The treated wastewater (effluent) is then pumped to the Land Application Facility between Flat Shoals Road and Highway 36. There the effluent water is used to irrigate 620 acres of pine forest. Also, the Industrial Programs is a vital part of the Water Reclamation Division. This program monitors and regulates the waste flows from local industries and businesses to help protect the WRF from irregular flows or loadings that may affect the treatment processes. The WRF was recently awarded the State of Georgia's GWPCA, "Best Operated Plant" for 2001 and is nominated for the "Best in the Nation" award.
