Juneteenth, short for "June Nineteenth," commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of the last enslaved African Americans, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It's a celebration of freedom, African American culture, and achievement, marking the effective end of slavery in the U.S., and became a federal holiday in 2021.
