GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

A geographic information system (GIS) consists of computers or workstations, mapping software and geographic data that can analyzed, edited, queried, printed and displayed in various forms.

The City of Covington GIS project began in 1998 as a joint venture between the City of Covington, Newton County Board of Commissioners and the Newton County Water Authority.

Digital Ortho Photography (aerial photographs), Parcel Data (provided by the Newton County Tax Assessors Office), and Road Centerlines serve as the backbone of our system. Other information available includes 2012 contour data (in 2-foot increments), wetlands, streams, zoning, historic districts and 2003, 2008, and 2013 aerial photography (2016 photos will be arriving in August). Utility data is under construction, and will continue to be updated once  complete.
